As a Marie Curie fellow, based at the University of Graz, Austria, I am examining the role of art in border zones, specifically exploring how participatory arts practices with key actors can intervene in the current dehumanised migration landscape.

Contextualised by global border art practices, the project compares artistic activity in Samos, Greece and Tenerife, Spain- two islands currently impacted by the EU’s migration and border policies.

Additionally, as a practice-based research, the project explores how creative engagement with refugees, long-term local residents, humanitarian aid workers, border security personel, artists and policy makers in both of these locations, can facilitate connection across these experiences.

Creative methods

As a practice based piece of research, I am using a range of creative methods to explore how to bring different key actors together who impact and are impacted by migration policies.

As the arts offer multi-sensory forms of expression and a language beyond text and numbers alone, I am particularly curious about what kinds of communication and interactions between people can happen.

Commissioned by Dulwich Picture Gallery for Tessa Jowell Health Centre, Bubble Dreams is the second in a series of four chosen commissions dedicated to embedding art in healthcare.

Through creative engagement with those impacting and impacted by migration policies in both of these locations, the project will explore how artistic methods can offer nuanced information about the relationships between these actors and how co-created artworks might provide scope for imagining future migration experiences that centre dignity and compassion.
